Throttle Calibration Guide + Motor Setup Guide REQUIRED Before Doing This
⚠ READ THIS FIRST
Regen braking uses Battery Current Regen Max Amps.
If this value is NOT set correctly in Motor CFG, you can:
- Trigger BMS Shutdown
- Cut throttle mid-ride
- Damage your battery
If you are not sure, please see the Motor Setup Guide first.
Step 1 — Connect to Your VESC
- Turn ON your kart / VESC.
- Open the VESC Tool App.
- Tap CONNECT and select your VESC.
Step 2 — Switch to ADC Control Mode
- Scroll the top bar to App CFG.
- Tap General.
- Change App to Use → ADC.
- Change Control Type → Current No Reverse Brake Center.
What this means:
- The throttle’s “center point” determines when regen activates.
- By default, regen begins at half throttle on the return stroke — we will fix that in the next step.
Step 3 — Adjust Regen Activation Point
To make regen activate immediately when you release throttle, adjust the center:
- Under the ADC area, there is another General box.
- Tap this box → select Mapping.
You will now see two important values:
- ADC1 Start Voltage
- ADC1 Center Voltage
Recommended Setting
Set ADC1 Center Voltage to 0.10V above ADC1 Start Voltage.
Example:
- Start Voltage: 0.90V
- Center Voltage: 1.00V
This ensures regen activates instantly off-throttle, not halfway.
- Tap Write — settings will not apply unless you write them.
Step 4 — Set Regen Strength Using Profiles
Regen braking force is controlled by motor current scaling inside Profiles.
- Scroll to the Profiles tab (top bar).
- Tap Add Profile.
- Adjust Motor Current Scale → start with 5–15%.
This percentage determines regen braking intensity.
You can increase or decrease based on preference. - Tap Save Profile.
- Tap Use Permanently.
(If you don’t, the profile will reset when reconnecting.)
Step 5 — Confirm Battery Regen Limits (IMPORTANT)
Regen is only as safe as your battery’s regen capability.
Go to: Motor CFG → General (Current mode)
Check Battery Current Regen Max.
Recommended Value
- -5A is safe for most lithium-ion packs.
